Giulia 105 Register News

FBHVC

The AROC Giulia 105/115 Register is a member of the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs. This organisation exists to uphold the freedom to use old vehicles on the road. It does this by representing the interests of owners of such vehicles to politicians, government officials, and legislators both in UK and (through membership of Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens) in Europe.
FBHVC is a company limited by guarantee, registered numbers 3842316, and was founded in 1988. There are nearly 500 subscriber organisations representing a total membership of over 250,000 in addition to individual and trade supporters.

ANTIFREEZE

In the article in the last newsletter, we said ‘Bluecol and Blue Star are well known brand names and both of these are declared suitable for classic cars’. Perhaps we should clarify that we were referring to the traditional blue coloured Bluecol - but the company also sell a red coloured Organic Acid Technology (OAT) product suitable only for modern cars, not classics. Even more confusingly, there is also Bluecol U which marketed as a universal top up and not an antifreeze product with which you would fill the whole tank. The manufacturer has assured us that this is suitable for historic vehicles.

It has also been brought to our attention that Halford’s sell a blue-coloured ‘Advanced’ antifreeze which has a label containing the phrase: ‘Older vehicles can further benefit...’ but on further examination it was discovered that this product does indeed contain OAT and therefore cannot be recommended for historic engines.

Our postbag has also been swelled by correspondence relating to the extremely poisonous nature of ethylene glycol, indeed the Cats’ Protection League have gone so far as to start an on-line petition to highlight the danger to small animals accidentally ingesting tiny quantities of the product. Propylene glycol is much safer and one of our new trade supporters, AAA Solutions Ltd, is about to launch a propylene glycol based antifreeze specifically aimed at historic vehicles.

It does remain a rather confused picture, but the important facts to remember for historic vehicle owners are: use only Inorganic Additive Technology (IAT) products according to the manufacturers’ instructions and take great care with any liquid containing ethylene glycol.

DRIVE IT DAY

Thank you to everyone who took part in Drive It Day this year and made it such a great success – we have enjoyed reading the reports and seeing the photos sent in. We have put up a special page on our website www.fbhvc.co.uk for these – please do keep sending them.
A number of our member clubs have expressed concern that the nearest Sunday to 23 April in 2011 is Easter Sunday, and the following weekend is a bank holiday. To avoid a clash with Easter and inevitably heavy holiday traffic a decision has been made to alter the date of Drive It Day to Sunday 17 April 2011. We appreciate that many clubs and organisations plan their events calendar a long way in advance and we hope that this early announcement will make it possible for clubs, individuals and organisations to support the day next year.

ANNUAL REGISTER GATHERING

This year we have kindly been invited to hold our annual gathering at the AROC East Anglian Alfa Day on Sunday 13th June 2010 at Ickworth House, Horringer, near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk IP29 5QE. Bring a picnic and enjoy the acres of space, woodland, wildlife, and a stunning architectural oddity, all with a story to match. See how one eccentric man's passion for art, Italy and for having a party led to the creation of this remarkable house and its renowned collection of paintings, portraits, furniture and other treasures. Let your imagination run riot as you stroll in one of England's finest, and possibly earliest, Italianate gardens, and explore the wonderfully intimate Spring and Silver Gardens or the intriguing Stumpery. There will be a small charge per person to enter the event, approx. £1 or £1.50 per person. The organisers hope to arrange a discounted rate for entry into the Hall. National Trust members remember to bring your card!

GIULIA-ENGINED SPECIAL

A member in Wales who had just completed the build of special using an Alfa Romeo 1962cc engine and gearbox recently contacted the Register. Before the car could be registered for the road, it had to be presented for a SVA (Single Vehicle Approval) test. A requirement of the test is to establish date of the engine. With the kind assistance of the Automobilisimo Storico at Arese, I was able to determine the unit had been manufactured in 1973. The Register confirmed this in writing and the authorities duly accepted the information. Here are some photos of the car.

GIULIA’S IN THE NEWS

A couple of months back I was contacted by the editor of Classic Cars, Glen Waddington. The magazine was planning a Spider photoshoot for their August issue and needed some good representative cars to complement the article. Register members kindly rallied to my assistance and we were able to provide all four of the required versions. A 1967 1600 Duetto (Martin Webb), the S2 2000 Veloce (owned from new by Peter Fewster and brought along on the day by his grandson Marcus Leeder), S3 Spider (Mark Ferri) and a very rare yellow S4 2.0i (Paul Frostick). The photoshoot took place up on the East Anglian coast and surrounding area. All photography by James Lipman.

I would like to thank all the owners for their time and trouble. In particular, I should like to thank Jim Talbott for being the ‘main-on-the-spot’, proofreading the article and coordinating everything on the day so well. The Spiders will be a cover feature in the August or September issue of the magazine.

My Giulia Super is included in the ‘Family Classics’ article due to be published in the August issue of Practical Classics. The comparison test organised by Ross Alkureshi also features a MG Magnette, Mk 1 Ford Cortina, Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen and a Fiat 238. Never heard of one of those? Neither had I! The magazine should be on the newsstands at the end of July.

BENVENUTO!

This month the Register is delighted to welcome Jeremy Evans with his 1987 Spider S3 Veloce and Harry Shaikh also with his S3 from 1984.
