Firstly, some Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs matters of interest:

 

ETHANOL IN PETROL

 

The FBHVC has received a number of letters about the effects of ethanol in petrol and so has summarised the main points below.

 

At concentrations of less than 5% there is no obligation for the petrol pumps to be labelled at point of sale, so petrol on sale can be 0% - 5% ethanol. Ethanol is hygroscopic so manufacturers should have been added corrosion inhibitors to it
before blending with petrol. Ethanol changes the volatility of the fuel which although it can give a slight benefit to cold starting this is at the expense of increased vapour lock problems and hot start problems in susceptible vehicles. Corrosion could
be a problem if inhibitors are not used.


 INCENTIVES TO SCRAP OLD CARS

At the end of 2008 the motoring and national press were full of stories about the scrapping of older vehicles. FBHVC is strongly committed to preserving the right to continue to use our classic vehicles on the road as freely as modern vehicles may be. The FBHVC deliberately do not get involved with any matters concerning more recent vehicles, because this would tend to dilute their efforts and or influence. They are able to negotiate concessions from various requirements, particularly nowadays environmental requirements, on the basis that there are limited numbers of classic vehicles, and they cover only a low mileage. Similarly, the international body FIVA have been told by the EU that at the present level of historic vehicle numbers they are prepared to continue to grant concessions, but would be concerned if the numbers rose as a proportion. Partly for that reason, FIVA have raised the age in their definition of historic vehicle to 30 years. A corollary to there being limited numbers of historic vehicles is that the vast majority of mass market cars are scrapped, perhaps to be re-cycled, when their economic life as everyday vehicles is ended, with only a limited number being kept by enthusiasts to become classic cars, preserved examples of our motoring heritage. Specialist cars, produced in small number, are always much more likely to survive. A House of Commons select committee, the Environmental Audit Committee, in its report on VED as an environmental tax, has proposed a cash incentive for scrapping old cars on environmental grounds. This has been supported in a paper prepared for the RAC Foundation suggesting an incentive to scrap cars that are 17/18 years old, the last tranche not fitted with catalytic converters. Effectively this is intended to speed up slightly what is anyway the normal cycle of use and disposal. FBHVC does not object to this in principle, but would be very concerned to examine the precise details of the proposal if it should be adopted by the government. The FBHVC do wish to see a reasonable number of cars surviving to become the classics of the future, and we would be strongly opposed to any element of compulsion, if that were to be suggested. We should also of course object to any more widespread incentive that would apply to vehicles approaching 25 years old or older, and perhaps encourage the scrapping of what would be potential restoration projects or source of spares.


 DRIVE IT DAY – Sunday 26th April 2009

Once again let’s make DID a day when we think about those who are not lucky enough to have their own historic vehicles, and do something to give them a stronger flavour of what historic vehicle ownership is all about perhaps by inviting someone to, for instance, try the driving position or even offer them a ride. For those who would like to give younger family members or acquaintances an opportunity to drive their historic car, it is worth noting several specialist insurance companies can offer top-up cover whereby named drivers over 20 who have held a full licence for a year can be put on comprehensive cover for the day. The primary aim of DID, of course, is to showcase the historic vehicle movement. Some have suggested that - in this age of concern about emissions - we are acting unwisely in encouraging people to use old vehicles: the FBHVC disagree, obviously. The historic vehicle movement, as our survey of 2006 showed, is a significant contributor to society: hundreds of thousands of people derive pleasure from it, tens of thousands earn some or all of their income from it, and it contributes over £3 billion to the national economy. All of that depends on freedom of use: lose that, and the movement will, inevitably, decline. To uphold the freedom we need, above all, to keep legislators on our side. Two things that always weigh heavily with legislators when they are considering new measures are; first, the number of voters who will be adversely affected and, second, whether the benefit resulting from the proposed measure is sufficient to justify upsetting that number of people. DID helps both: it shows the large numbers, and by making an obvious contrast with the other days in the year when it is rare to see anything over 20 years old, it shows how little historic vehicles are used. It thus demonstrates that restrictive measures will have negligible benefit on emissions, but would upset large numbers of people.

105’s Head for Silverstone

The Annual Giulia 105 Register Gathering will take place at the Silverstone Classic on Sunday 26th July. At time of writing I am still waiting for the event organisers, Goose Communications, to advise the launch of their booking website. This was originally scheduled for the middle of January with a cut-off date at the end of March. Currently visitors to the event website www.silverstoneclassic.com will find the site is ‘Under construction and coming soon’. As previously offered, the organisers have promised early bookers the opportunity to BOGOF – Buy One Get One Free. I shall keep my eye on this matter and will post details on both the new AROC and Giulia 105 Register websites when the details become available to me.

Event History

The Silverstone Classic started life in the early 1990s as the Coys' International Historic Festival, and has evolved into what is today the Silverstone Classic. Now in its 17th year the Silverstone Classic has established itself as one of the leading Classic motor racing events on both the UK and international motorsports calendar.

The event features classic racing cars from the 1920s to the 1990s, from Formula One through to Classic Saloons, Sports Cars and Le Mans cars and brings together on track one of the largest collections of famous racing cars seen anywhere in the world. The 2009 event at the historic and demanding Silverstone circuit will see around 700 race cars and 900 competitors compete over two days in over 20 races.

A key feature of the Classic is the huge car display, in excess of 4,000 cars from the world's most iconic marques, open pit garages and a variety of family-led entertainment from funfairs to air displays, exhibitions, shops and auto jumble displays.

This year the Silverstone Classic is going to a new level, offering both racing and non-racing fans the unique attraction of two world class concerts on the Friday and Saturday nights respectively. Both concerts will take place in the evenings after racing and will be separate to the main on track activities.

Event goers will be able to purchase tickets to attend both the concerts and race activities.

105’s Head For Silverstone

 

The Giulia 105/115 Register will hold it’s annual gathering at the Silverstone Classic on Sunday 26th July 2009.

Owners of Bertone coupes, Spiders, Giulia saloons and Berlina’s will all be able to display their cars in our dedicated infield parking area.

Although the event will run from Friday, the main day for the Register will be on the Sunday. A discount ticket offer will be available through the Register for all days, more details in due course.


Visitors to the Classic will experience eight decades of classic motor racing entertainment over the three days. Twenty-one races and fifteen qualifying sessions over the three-days featuring over six hundred cars many driven in their day by some of the worlds greatest drivers.


There will be entertainment for the whole family:
* Open paddocks, see the race cars close up, talk to the drivers
* Special track displays
* Air displays from WWII planes to jet fighters and parachute displays
* Huge festival trade fair
* Live Music
* Period funfair


New for the 2009 event will be a completely new race format for mid 90’s Super Touring Cars, capturing the great days of BTCC. Organisers will be targeting at least 30 cars to take part and as many original drivers as possible competing for the annual David Leslie Memorial Trophy.
A new world record will be attempted in association with Classic & Sports Car Magazine to get 1000 classic road cars on track at the same time. A £10 entry fee per car will raise £10,000 for a nominated charity.


James Elliott, Editor of Classic & Sports Car Magazine said: "It's probably not the best known world record but there is one for the greatest number of classic cars on a track at one time, moving. It is currently in the 870's and was set at Hockenheim. They keep trying to beat their own record and keep failing and there is no reason why we can't beat this record as there are so many fabulous cars here. So we're going to work with Roger Etcell and his team to do a big push and smash this record next year by a long, long way and make this a British record.

Cotswold Alfa Day 2008 - Sunday 29th June

A drive through the Cotswolds to Broughton Castle, Nr Banbury the home of Lord & Lady Saye and Sele.

Described by historian Sir Charles Oman in 1898 as, “The most beautiful castle in all England, for sheer loveliness of the combination of water, woods and picturesque buildings”.  A sentiment echoed by the noted diarist James Lees-Milne in a 1989 entry "It is still the most romantic house imaginable.”

The Castle is also famous as a venue for film makers including; The Madness of King George, Shakespeare in Love, The Scarlet Pimpernel and many more.  The castle website has full details.

Cotswold Alfa Day 2008 Broughton Castle

We intend to start the day with coffee or tea from around 10 am at the Roman Court Hotel in Stow on the Wold, where we will provide you with a route plan for a scenic drive through the Cotswolds to take at your leisure, with a simple observational quiz, arriving at Broughton Castle in time for lunch in the spacious grounds.  The Castle opens at 2pm. The final timings will be announced in due course.

There are limited catering facilities (teas, cakes etc) at the Castle more detail to follow but I think most of us will be bringing a picnic.

Anyone not wishing to join us for the drive can arrive at the Castle from about 12pm.

The AROC Giulia 105 Register is supporting this event and we hope to get a good selection of 105’s along again.  In addition we have invited the Vintage Register, 916 Register, 2600 Register and there will be a display of the more unusual Alfas in the courtyard of the Castle.  If any of the other Registrars are reading this and feel like joining in please contact one of the Cotswold section committee. Sadly we cannot expect to get the Red Arrows to turn up again but we are working on other options!

Entry will be by ticket bought in advance, they will be available from Matthew Willmott or at section meetings and events.  The cost for the day which will include the route plan, tea or coffee at the Roman Court Hotel and entry to the Castle will be £8 per person, children between 5-14 will be £ 3 & under 5’s free.

This month we welcome a number of new 105 owners to the Register.

 

Ian Burch from Tring has a very tidy red S3 Spider, which I believe was first registered in France. Within days of Ian notifying me of his new acquisition, I had arranged for him to take part in a cover photoshoot for Classic & Sportscar magazine. The article, ‘Sports Car Supertest’, features the top ten roadsters you can buy for £5000 from the 1960s to the ‘90s. This should appear in the July 2007 issue due on the bookstands on June 7th.

Bristol & West member Martin King has owned his 1750 GT Veloce since 2003 but only just got around to registering his car with me. He tells me he is slowly improving the inside and out of the Bertone and that the mechanics are very sound.

David Perkins from Bournemouth has sent me the details of his Seaking-converted right-hand drive S4 Spider and Paul Millman; information on what could be one of the last S4’s manufactured. The car is an American specification with side running lights, high level boot lid stop light, air conditioning and has the factory hard top.

Paul notes on his registration form:

I purchased the vehicle on 28 March 1997. The car had one previous owner (Ian McIntosh from Aberdeen). He told me he had approached Alfa Romeo in Italy about purchasing the last S4 Spider to be manufactured and in accordance with their instructions he placed a deposit with them.


A short time prior to taking delivery he was contacted by Alfa Romeo who a offered an apology as the last Spider had been also reserved by another buyer. He told me he was offered this car, which he was informed me, was the third but last Spider to be manufactured. I have never checked out his story.
