Visit to Lord McAlpine's Private Museum in Fawley

Sunday May 21st 2006

Lord McAlpine opens his private museum/collection to the public 4 or 5 times a year, however admission is strictly by invitation only.  We were fortunate enough to be invited to this amazing place on Sunday 21st May.  The centre piece of the museum is a working steam railway and a mile or so of track which runs up and down a steep track through the estate passing by Llamas, Deer and Wallabys!

On Display inside are simply hundreds of model railway engines of all sizes plus some going round a number of tracks.  The museum is filled with all sorts of Railway memorabilia from old signs to a complete departure board from Brighton Railway station.  There is also some automotive memorabilia and 3 real cars - a Jaguar, a Rolls Royce and a Bentley.  To give you an idea of the wide range of other articles of interest at the museum these 3 cars are displayed around a full size model Rhino!

Despite the torrential rain a good number of members turned out and we lined up a good selection of cars beside the signal box. The cars below are Les Paul's 1750 GS saloon, Michael Haines 3.0 GTV, Liz and Peter Loftus' Lancia Fulvia Zagato, Philip O'Hara's SZ, new members Christine and Peter Wicks' 2600 Touring and John Timms 156 V6

Despite the weather this was a great afternoon out and if you ever get the chance to go, I would highly recommend it.
