Alfa Romeo has confirmed that the Giulietta will reach end of life before the end of 2020, replaced indirectly with the new Tonale SUV.

Fabio Migliavacca, Product Marketing Manager for Alfa Romeo, said “Giulietta is expected to finish its life at the end of this year.  The trend is to have SUVs in the C-segment, so the Tonale SUV will be the replacement for Giulietta”.

After its launch, Alfa Romeo sold almost 79,000 Giuliettas across Europe in 2011, but those figures have dropped over the years to around 15,000 last year.  Even so, the end of the line for the Giulietta will be a sad day for lovers of Alfa Romeo, with the Giulietta still rightly having a huge following within the Alfa Romeo Owners Club UK.

The recent leaked Tonale images still retain much of the concept car designs, albeit with less advanced wing mirrors and a more toned-down interior, and if the dynamics of the Stelvio are anything to go by, it shouldn’t feel like an SUV when behind the wheel.  And with plug-in hybrid options similar to the Jeep Renegade and Compass, it will be a welcome first step by Alfa into alternative fuels.

But the love for the Giulietta will continue for many years, especially among those who do not follow the SUV trend.  There are many who recognise the commercial importance of following the SUV and crossover demand, but there are still many who would want a C-segment car from Alfa Romeo.  But for that, we may need to wait some time.
