Report: Breakfast at The Oil Can Cafe
The Oil Can Cafe is situated in The Carding Shed
visitor centre and forms part of a local emporium alongside IK Classics, High Society Vintage Clothing and other retail outlets. Here you can enjoy your breakfast, take afternoon tea serviced in delicate china cups and saucers or sample some of the delicious home made cakes on offer. Established in 2012, The Oil Can Café sits within The Carding Shed, which was originally a woolen mill but has now been transformed into a place to browse classic cars, purchase vintage clothing and rest a while in the quirky and vibrant surroundings.
Taking advantage of the welcome break in the weather following the combined spoilers of Storm Emma, the so-called Beast from the East and latterly The Pest from the West, thirty-three hungry local members in a selection of Alfa Romeos, ranging from Simon's Alfasud to Stephen's Stelvio, turned up on Sunday March 11 for Breakfast at The Oil Can Café all ready and eager to get stuck in to our breakfasts. We even had Howard and his lovely AC Greyhound along for the ride too.
Considering that on the day of our visit it was Mothers' Day, and therefore exceptionally busy, the venue looked after us very well. The service was absolutely spot on, despite there being one or two minor issues caused by the sheer volume of customers, which were dealt with quickly and efficiently without fuss. A big thank you is therefore is due to Front of House Manager Janet and the rest of the staff at the cafe for accommodating us so nicely and in such a friendly manner. Our breakfasts were lovely, being expertly cooked and served hot to our tables. Some of our members took advantage of the take-out service and left with their generous wedges of home-made cake, presented in specially-insulated boxes, for the journey home.
It was great to get out and about at last after all the recent wintery weather and we managed to attract a fair few event first-timers and new members too along with our regulars who all reported that they had enjoyed the day immensely. Following the success of this event, we intend to have a return visit to the Oil Can Cafe later on in the year and will also arrange more breakfast meetings at other venues throughout the region in the coming months so watch this space!
