Report: Do you want a Flake with that?

Having seen the back of winter and with spring in the air, we had a North Yorkshire Dales Tour on Sunday April 8 to blow away those winter cobwebs. Imaginatively sub-titled ‘The Do You Want A Flake With That?’ Run, the tour started and finished at different Ice Cream Farms and covered 99 kilometres. We also stopped for Sunday Lunch along the way.

With Tom and Andrea joining us from the Lancashire Section and Jason and Janet coming up to meet us from the Midlands, twenty- six AROC members (plus a couple of grandchildren for good measure) met up at Billy Bob’s Parlour near Skipton for an American-style breakfast of Pancakes and maple syrup and other interesting accompaniments; different but delicious and a good way to set us up for the day.

Suitably replete, and with Stuart and Gwenneth’s grandkids surgically but humanely removed from the Children’s playground, we set off for the first leg of the Tour from Skipton to the stunning Ayesgarth Falls via A59 and B6160 passing through the picturesque villages of Rylstone (we saw no cowboys), Cracoe, Threshfield, Conistone, Kilnsey, Kettlewell, Starbotton, Buckden, Cray, Kidstones, Newbiggin and Thoralby before arriving at Ayesgarth. The scenery was stunning and the weather stayed dry for us. There was even the odd glimpse of sunshine too.

Our planned stop at Ayesgarth turned out to be shorter than expected due to the car parks onsite being full to overflowing so we continued with the second leg of our Tour onward to Reeth via Redmire and Castle Bolton, where we found James Ferguson in photogenic mood using the Castle as a backdrop for his 147.

From Reeth, our thirteen-car convoy made its way through some of the Dales’ lesser-known and sparsely-populated roads to Masham via the pretty market town of Richmond, the renowned equine village of Middleham, East Witton and Jervaulx, famous for its ruined Abbey of course. The scenery along this leg of the route was pretty spectacular and we had the road nearly all to ourselves.

Parking up in the Market Square at Masham, we stopped for our lunch at The King’s Head Hotel where we enjoyed some great food served by friendly and attentive staff, leaving room of course for our ice cream to come at the nearby Brymor Ice Cream Farm.

We actually over-ran at Brymor, spending a lot of time gassing and enjoying the conviviality of the occasion so didn’t actually get to Ripon to end our Tour but rather aptly, we finished our Do You Want A Flake With That? Tour at the second Ice Cream Parlour of the day. Once again, grandkids Ruby and Izabelle had to be prised out of the Children’s play area at Brymor, with Stuart and Gwenneth being kept busy.

Overall, this was an excellent way to banish the winter blues driving our Alfa Romeos in the glorious Yorkshire Dales National Park. Everybody enjoyed the event but perhaps next time we should note that mobile telephone reception's not the best up there, being the cause one or two minor blips along the way. Despite this, we all managed to have a thoroughly enjoyable day; safely and without incident.

Yorkshire member Mick Sheppard and his wife Melissa recorded the Tour for prosterity using a variety of on-board camera equipment in their Spider. The video has now been uploaded to YouTube. Part 1 and Part 2 can be seen here. Nice one you two!
If you've missed out on this Run, you might be pleased to know that we are in the process of organising further Runs and Breakfast meetings for later in the year so watch this space! Thanks to James Ferguson for his help planning this event.
