Report: Our June Section meeting

The Bay Horse at Green Hammerton was once again the place to be for Yorkshire-based Alfisti. It was a pleasure to welcome first-time attendees Michael and returning lapsed member Ian. We also had Malcolm and Val who came to see us in the beutifully restored (Bertone) GT Coupe. Malcolm has owned this car for thirty-five years and the fit and finish of the restoration, carried out by Bonello Auto Services, was outstanding. As a result of his visit to our meeting, Malcolm is re-joining the Club; good news all round.

We looked back on what we'd been up to since our May meeting. We had a great time with our Weekend away to support Clive Baker and the Somerset Section at South West Alfa Day at The Haynes Motor Museum, as well as our Section's very successful premier event ITCAM3 at Newby Hall and the Open Day at Woodcock Garage in Willerby. Turning to our upcoming events, we discussed our rendezvous with the North East Section to support the HMS Racing Alfa Romeo Giulietta at  Round 5 of The BTCC at our local Croft Circuit on June 24. For our Club's big National event National Alfa Day at Weston Park on July 1, a good number of us will be staying for an overnight stop at a hotel in Telford as we intend to make a weekend of it.

Looking further ahead, we've organised a Section Weekend Away Day with a visit to Redcar for Fish and Chips on September 8 followed by an overnight stay in one of the town's seafront hotels. This is the day before our attendance at Sewerby Hall for The Bridlington Weekend of Motoring, where we have reserved spaces for AROC members' cars, so we'll enjoy a scenic coastal drive to the Bridlington event on September 9. This AROC Weekend Away-style event is going to be open to other Sections, with the North East and Lincolnshire Sections already expressing an interest.

As the evening meeting progressed, it became obvious that our theme for the evening should have been 916 Spider Malady Night! Fraser's Spider decided that it wanted to drop all of its coolant rendering the car immobile while Mick and Melissa's Twin Spark at first refused to start so we were left with the sight of two Spiders both with their bonnets open in the Bay Horse's car park. Simon's GTV meanwhile was also spending the night at Turin Motors instead of our Section meeting. I believe this is what's known as 'Character Building' by we Alfa Romeo owners!

It was a double-whammy of sorts for Mick, whose Spider finally decided to fire up, as a recent trip in the garden at home had resulted in his achilles heel snapping. The surgical boot he'd been wearing for the previous three weeks had to stay on for another six meaning that Melissa had and will be acting as Mick's driver! If only the boot was on the other foot...

While on the subject of mechanical breakdowns (surely unknown or very rare for Alfa Romeos!) Mark told us about his GT suddenly stopping and refusing to carry on at full power on a recent night out. This was remedied at first by the AA man by use of a brass mallet. Yes really! Unfortunately, this turned out to be only a temporary repair but has since been fully sorted by giving the GT's EGR valve a thorough clean. So, just another typical busy and convivial Section meeting at The Bay Horse, where we also managed to sell a few more of our Section's black polo shirts, including one for Simon's young nephew Oliver, a small size by all accounts but the receiver of a medium. Showing the usual Yorkshire thrift, Simon says that he'll grow into it...
